President of India Stresses on Need for Transformation of Higher Education in India
Attends 15 year celebrations of the Indian School of Business (ISB)
November 20, 2016: The Indian higher education system needs to transform based on a new and unprecedented imagination striking a balance between quality and quantity, access and inclusion, teaching and research, Honourable President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee, stressed speaking at the Indian School of Business (ISB).
Speaking at the 15th anniversary celebrations of the ISB at its Mohali campus, the President held ISB as an example of this much transformation and called for extraordinary changes in our higher education system including changes in their governance and regulatory mechanisms that recognise institutions for their quality, performance and contributions to the society. There is also a need to put in place a rewards and recognition system that provides more resources to institutions that perform exceedingly well across disciplines. There is also a need to encourage institutions that focus on real world issues providing an environment that is conducive for academics to carry out relevant research that sets new benchmarks.
The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Shri V P Singh Badnore, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Prakash Javadekar, were also present at the occasion in which students, alumni, faculty and staff of the School participated.
This is the 2nd time in less than a year that the President of India is meeting the students and faculty of the premier business school which was set up in 2001 in Hyderabad and started its Mohali campus in April 2012. Over the years, ISB has notched up several accolades for itself as the youngest School to rank among top global MBA programmes, the First South Asian management School to receive international AACSB accreditation, and as the most research productive management institution from India among others.
Echoing the President’s thoughts Union HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar said there is an urgent need to realign our priorities for higher education in India and that the government is actively working on a New Education Policy for which all Indian universities were being consulted. Inviting ISB to be a part of this exercise, the Union Minister held the School as an example that others could follow. Stating the new policy would focus on encouraging research the minister said educational Institutions should also be partners in progress to the Government and not remain self-indulgent “job factories,” and become powerful idea generators and innovators.
Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Shri V P Singh Badnore, “I am happy to know that ISB is in the mission of creating young leaders through its innovative programmes, outstanding faculty, relevant research and thought leadership. Research and development form the basis of future competitiveness of an economy. In this regard, I am happy that the ISB Faculty has contributed to the research output from India over the last few years. I have asked the ISB Dean to suggest ideas on how ISB’s intellect can help in a more effective administration of Punjab and Chandigarh. I congratulate all the members of the Indian School of Business on the School’s successful completion of 15 years. May you achieve more Success and continue to be a Pride of not just Punjab or Chandigarh but of the whole nation.”
Addressing the gathering earlier, Adi Godrej, Chairman of the Executive Board, ISB and Chairman of the Godrej group, said innovation was always core to ISB’s DNA and it continues to be so even to this day. We have strived for the best-in-class in everything we do to provide the best management education for our students and the best executives for the world without losing sight of national priorities. Towards this ISB has always seen itself as a partner to the government focusing on programmes that were aligned to national priorities. In this context the ISB Chairman said the School is setting aside a certain number of scholarships in all its long term programmes for government, military and NGO officials who would like to take time off to pursue management education.
Welcoming the dignitaries and the gathering earlier, Sunil Kant Munjal, Chairman, Mohali Campus Advisory Board observed that it was indeed heartening to receive encouragement from the Honourable President whose ideas and initiatives on education are path breaking and recalled how he had spent time with students and faculty earlier.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Dean Rajendra Srivastava said ISB is set to enter a new phase of growth and I believe that with the kind of support it has from the business community, its students, and most importantly its alumni, we should endeavor to be the top business school in Asia and among very best in the world in the not too distant future.
