New Delhi, March 29, 2016:  India must become a global hub for digital and smart manufacturing if it has to achieve double digit growth in the coming years, NITI Aayog CEO and Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, Amitabh Kant stressed here today adding India's services-led growth model will have to be reoriented to manufacturing.
He was speaking at a roundtable discussion organised by the Indian School of Business (ISB), the theme of which was ‘Making Make in India Happen’. The discussion, moderated by Hero MotoCorp Joint MD, Sunil Kant Munjal, included Ipsita Dasgupta, Industry Chief Commercial Officer of GE, South Asia, Professor Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, Indian School of Business(ISB) and A Didar Singh, Secretary General of FICCI.
Adding that Indian entrepreneurs were second to none, the NITI Aayog CEO, however stressed that protectionism would only generate mediocrity.  “India has over protected its companies including the automotive sector. Every time we have opened up, Indian companies have done well. Over protect and we will have only third class companies,” he remarked, responding to an observation from one of the participants on encouragement to MSMEs. 
In his keynote address on how India has demonstrated its manufacturing potential, Amitabh Kant further said, “Innovation in design, combined with low cost products led by young new age entrepreneurs  is enabling opportunities for several  great products emerging from India. India’s ability to excel by combining innovation, skill and low cost products is unparalleled. This has been demonstrated by the increasing number of Indian startups led by dynamic young entrepreneurs in the last few years. On its part, the government is focused on creating the right eco system that will give a thrust to the manufacturing sector in a big way.  A significant step in this direction is that the Government has started encouraging States to compete with each other and leverage their potential
Lauding ISB for starting the Management Programme in Manufacturing and Operations, he said, “Intelligent manufacturing will create a new job market and drive India’s growth in future. The course started by ISB in Manufacturing and Operations (MPMO) is very unique as it will have young designers, innovators and manufacturers who will propel India’s growth at a much faster rate.”
The event was organised to mark the launch of the second batch of the Management Programme in Manufacturing & Operations (MPMO), offered by ISB. The Programme, designed jointly by the Munjal Institute for Global Manufacturing and the Centre for Executive Education at the ISB, has been created to meet the increasing need for techno-business managers for the manufacturing sector. The course consists of general management concepts along with in-depth understanding of core subjects in manufacturing, operations excellence and supply chain management. It is offered in a blended format of classroom and online learning, allowing professionals to take the course even as they continue with their jobs.
Welcoming all the panelists and guests, Pradeep Singh, Deputy Dean ISB and CEO Mohali Campus, said, “The ISB has launched four unique programs last year including Manufacturing and Operations, Healthcare, Policy Making and Infrastructure. All these programs demonstrate our willingness as an educational institute to understand and contribute to the needs of the industry.”
Setting the context for the discussion, Sunil Kant Munjal said, “The Indian economy has been witnessing positive sentiments during the past few months. Macroeconomic indicators have also displayed an encouraging trend in recent times. However, the situation of the manufacturing sector in India is still a cause of concern and needs an urgent need to take several measures to fast track its growth.”
Speaking about the potential of India’s growth, Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, ISB said,” If India is to grow at ten percent and cater to the needs of the exploding middle class and meet the demands of a growing market, companies need to innovate both on product as well as processes. Process innovation increases productivity and we have to learn to do proper branding and move up the value chain.  The sector needs more people with know-how to identify market opportunities and pursue them to build the right products and manufacturing capabilities. This is where an academic institution can make a difference by offering education that is cutting edge and meets the demand of the industry and the professionals. The MPMO is ISB’s contribution to the Prime Minister's ‘Make in India’ call.  We aim to bring global best practices to India and contribute our bit to the movement.”
Ipsita Dasgupta said, “India has enormous potential, but the biggest constraint holding us back is our ability and desire to unleash our potential.   Our diversity and the SME sector present an opportunity to create a market for niche customers and become a hub for best practices in the small and mid-size businesses. There is a need to have specialized courses and vocational courses.
Profile of the first batch of MPMO
The first batch of MPMO has a pan India participation from professionals across sectors - Auto, Energy, Cement, Infrastructure, FMCG, IT Services, Textiles, Engineering, Oil etc. representing companies including Ashok Leyland, ACC Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Company Ltd, Cairn India Ltd, Capgemini India Pvt Ltd, Essar Oilfields Services Ltd, Forbes Marshall, Hero MotoCorp, Philips India, Punj Lloyd, Reliance Energy, Tata Motors Ltd and Vardhaman Group.
