“Mercado 2011”– the annual retail conclave at the Indian School of Business (ISB) was an exciting event that transformed the campus, not only into a shoppers’ paradise but also a mecca for the connoisseurs of fashion. Organised by ISB’s Retail Club, in association with the Retailers Association of India (RAI), the event was a platform for members from the retail industry and management education field to interact with one another. This year, the theme was “Redefining Retail,” a multifaceted exploration on the future of retailing.
The event began with a panel discussion on “Redefining Retail: Future & Emerging Trends,” with distinguished members from the industry, including Purnendu Kumar, Vice President – Retail & Consumer Goods Division, Technopak and Randeep Singh, General Manager – India, Assa Abloy. The discussion delved into the changing FDI regulations as well as other aspects of the industry such as the entry of foreign players into the Indian retail space, rural retailing, private labels and E-commerce.
The final round of the “Retail Trigger” competition was also held during “Mercado 2011.” The top six teams from the preliminary round set up their stalls and competed to sell merchandise from various NGOs. ISB’s Atrium was converted into a “High Street,” with colourful stalls selling garments, candles, and leather goods, amongst other merchandise. The teams were judged on marketing, promotion, merchandise planning and store design strategies by a panel of judges appointed by the RAI. “Retail Trigger” was carried out in collaboration with “Fair Trade Forum – India,” an organisation that reaches out to more than 100,000 grassroots-level producers, including artisans and farmers, in India
The event culminated on a glamorous note with a musical performance and fashion show organised by students, where models from the ISB community showcased designs from local stores. This part of the event was organised in association with “myntra.com.”
