ISB’s Mohali campus hosts panel discussion on Supply Chain Management and Climate Change
ISB’s Mohali campus jointly hosted a panel discussion on ‘Supply Chain Management and Climate Change’ with British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh and Alliance Française, Chandigarh. The event, conceptualised and organised by Punj Lloyd Institute of Infrastructure Management, saw some enthusiastic participation from local dignitaries.
Globally, and in India, an increasing number of companies are responding to climate change by attempting to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, in their operations and supply chains. Business activities are likely to be affected by physical changes and government regulations related to climate change. However, on the positive side managing the risks has also resulted in enhancing brand and market value.
The session started with a welcome address by Mr Madhav Lal, Executive Director of Bharti Institute of Public Policy at ISB. Mr Lal gave a warm welcome to the delegates from the French Embassy, British High Commission, Chevening, and other prominent members.
Mr David Lelliott British Deputy High Commissioner Chandigarh gave the opening address. He said, “We are pleased to be working with our European and Indian friends on today’s event. The UK remains committed to tackle climate change at home and to support developing nations in delivering their climate change targets. Over the next five years the UK has committed £ 5.8 billion in climate finance support to climate change vulnerable nations. He further said, “This event comes at an exciting time, with the Indian and UK Prime Ministers confirming that both countries will ratify the Paris climate agreement in the next few months.”
Addressing the audience next, Mr Dominique Waag Director Alliance Française Chandigarh said, “France has been listening to India and highlight its role in working towards a sustainable lifestyle.”
Ms Devaki Panani from Chevening also gave her views saying that the 2015 Paris climate change conference, in which 196 nations took part, was an effort towards cooperation and coordination to save the world. However, we still need to adopt and implement mitigation and adaptation measures that were decided in the conference, as India will be acutely affected by the climate change”.
What followed next was a panel discussion on supply chain management and climate change, moderated by Rajiv Bhargava Associate Director, Munjal Institute for Global Manufacturing .The panellists included Dr Anton Reinfelder (MD Groz Beckert) Mr Robert Harman (MD Zetor India private limited) Mr Vikram Hans (MD of Multi Overseas (I) Pvt ltd) and Ms Shruti (Manager Hindustan Unilever). The panellists discussed the current threats to environment and impact of climate change on supply chains and measures required for reducing carbon footprint. They also touched upon impediments that prevent management from adopting green practices and provided their perspectives on supply cha​ins of the future
This very engaging and interesting session came to an end with an audience Q and A along with a vote of thanks.
