Aadhar demystified: International Conference on Digital Identity

The inaugural International Conference on ‘Digital Identity’, which focused on Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric identification system developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), was organised by ISB’s Digital Identity Research Initiative (DIRI) at its Hyderabad Campus between July 11 to July 13, 2018

The conference was inaugurated by the Chairman of UIDAI, Mr. J. Satyanarayana, IAS (Retd), and saw the participation of professors and researchers from premier institutes that include IITs, IIITs, NIPFP, Deakin University (Australia) etc. along with representatives from organizations like Facebook, IDinsight, Brookings India among many others.

Through the various panel discussions spanning over three days, the conference brought about multiple and interesting points of view expressed vis-à-vis Aadhaar and aspects centred around Aadhaar such as its current state, identification of gaps, cybersecurity, privacy and exclusion.
The poster session, which is one of the key ingredients of the conference, enabled one-on-one interaction of participants from diverse disciplines with the DIRI fellows and research associates who are involved in state-of-the-art research on Aadhaar.

The conference concluded with an engaging dialogue on the future directions moderated by Prof. Ashwini Chhatre, Associate Professor of Public Policy (ISB) & Executive Director at DIRI.

The conference proved successful in creating a space for participants from different walks of life to dialogue and collaborate around various social, political and economic aspects of how Aadhaar is used in public service delivery and the public policy connotations of such usage.
